Description
These are clump forming onions which we have been growing for nearly 20 years and just love! They are delicious used in any of the ways onions are used and are particularly good roasted. When we started growing them we saved the best ones for seed and ate the rest. Over the years they have increased in size so now we save the best middle sized ones for seed and eat the large ones and the small ones. Some produce bulbils which can also be planted to form new clumps.
The original ones that we grew came from the South Island but they do exceptionally well even for us in the Far North. Along with our other perennial alliums that we grow these were a game changer for us and have kept us in onions all year round for many years now. They are easy to grow and very productive – we definitely wouldn’t be without them!
They are planted between May and July and harvested December to January when the leaves start to die back. One advantage of this is that they are grown at a time when there is not so much competition for bed space. We then cure them in a dry shady place before hanging in sacks to store them. More creative people could plait them but we have too many for that!
Our Tree Onions and Shallots are quite similar and both are fantastic producers. They came from different sources though so we keep growing them as separate lines and they do produce differently in different seasons.
