Description
These unusual onions are a type of clumping onion which are grown by planting a bulb which multiplies into a clump of maybe 10 for each bulb planted. They are smaller and rounder than our shallots with a great taste. Perfect whole in casseroles or roasted, excellent skewered on barbecues and they make the most amazing pickled onions. They keep very well.
They are planted between May and July and harvested December to January when the leaves start to die back. One advantage of this is that they are grown at a time when there is not so much competition for bed space. We then cure them in a dry shady place before hanging in sacks to store them. More creative people could plait them but we have too many for that!
