Seed Saving

A Resource to help with Seed Saving

I have been a Seed Saver for over 25 years now and love everything about it including sharing my knowledge with other people. Over the last few years I have been lucky enough to be involved in an amazing project by Hauora Hokianga at Rawene Hospital. “The development of the Ara Rongoā Whakaora – Revitalization health and wellbeing walkway provides gardens with a mix of Rongoā and organic food sources, these gardens provide a learning center as well as a place of sustainable harvesting. These gardens will provide Kōrari for raranga/weaving, Rongoā rākau for medicine, organic food source to be shared between the hospital and community. They will also provide a space for those who need to reset themselves in a natural and nurturing environment.”

As part of this project, alongside the organic māra kai, a seed bank is being developed as a community resource. I have taught many Seed Saving Workshops through the project and also developed the resource below to be a quick reference guide for seed saving for the main garden plant groups.

We are happy to share this resource widely and it can be downloaded freely as a pdf. Hope you find it useful.
